Atypical Canine Respiratory Illness in Los Angeles
As many of us have already have seen in the news, the mysterious canine illness that impacts our furry family members’ respiratory function has reached Los Angeles. On November 22nd 2023, The Los Angeles Times published an article, ‘Thinking of the dog park? Think twice: Mystery dog illness in L.A. spurs warnings by officials,’ that reported 10 cases in L.A. County. And while the illness’s origin, transmission, and treatment is unknown at this time, it has been reported in Oregon, Colorado, and New Hampshire and has been fatal in some instances.
Not a lot is known about this atypical canine infectious respiratory disease (aCIRD). What we do know is that it causes symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge and lethargy and it is said to transfer through dog-dog contact and is extremely contagious. Our pups rely on us to keep them safe, so here are some tips to help you through this confusing time.
What can you do to keep your pup safe?
Speak with your veterinarian about any recommendations specific to your pup.
Make sure that your pup is up-to-date on his vaccines.
Avoid high trafficked dog areas such as dog parks.
If your pup attends daycare or group classes, speak with the staff to see what extra precautions they are taking.
What should you do if your pup gets sick?
Take your pup to your veterinarian.
Let your community know. If your pup was playing or attended an event with other dogs a few days prior to getting sick let those people know.
Isolate your pup from other dogs.
Although this unknown respiratory illness should be taken seriously, if you are taking precautions and aware of your surroundings you should be able to continue with your normal daily routines. If you still have concerns, please seek out your veterinarian for additional advice.
