When Walks Are Canceled
If you’ve been watching the weather, you already know that Los Angeles is going to be experiencing an extreme amount of rain this week, about 5-10 inches just by Tuesday. This might have you canceling your pup’s walks and curling up on the couch with a blanket, a cup of tea, and a good movie. At Little Paws Academy we are excited to see the rain as this is a wonderful time to socialize your puppy to rain, teach new inside games, and create a lasting relationship with your pup for years to come.
Here are some fun activities you can do with your pup when walks are canceled.
Take a Socialization Stroll- We know this is a type of walk, but for young puppies it is critical that they are socialized to all types of weather, so if flooding and thunder is not predicted in your area take a socialization stroll in the rain. Pick a time when the rain is light and grab a rain jacket, umbrella, boots and your pup’s favorite treats and toys. Create a fun experience your pup can’t wait to do again by exploring and splashing in the puddles. Be sure to watch her body language, adjust as needed, and head home before you both get too wet.
Play Hide ’n Seek- This game is a fun way to work on your recall. Have a family member hold your pup so he can watch you hide, but not immediately follow you. Once you are out of sight, call your pup to come find you and have your family member release him. Make it easy by encouraging him to find you the entire time he is searching. Once he’s found you have a little party and give him a treat. Then repeat! To make it more challenging for your pup, try not letting him see where you hide or being silent after you initially call him. Be sure to praise and give him a treat every time he successfully finds you!
Create an Indoor Agility Course- Make an agility course out of household items, such as chairs, boxes, books, water bottles, etc. The more creative the better. Using treats, teach your pup to climb over, under, or go around the obstacles you have made. When she has learned them all, complete a full run of all the obstacles in a row! For pups under 1 year old, be sure to keep any jumps lower than their shoulders.
Teach a New Trick- This a great way to build your relationship and there are so many fun tricks to be taught. You can teach a basic command or something unique, such as give paw, weave between your legs, or jump through a hoop. Grab yourself some treats, pick a quiet spot in your home, be patient, and help your puppy learn his 1st, 2nd, or 15th new trick!
