Simple Tips to Make Halloween Fun for all Pups

With Halloween just around the corner, have you ever wondered what your puppy will think of it all? Children ringing the doorbell all evening wearing spooky costumes, decorations that move and make sounds on their own, and food and candy that smell delicious has to have our puppies wondering, ‘What the heck is going on?!’

So before Halloween is here, it would be wise to take some time preparing ourselves and our puppies for the big night. Here are some simple tips to help keep your puppy safe and comfortable through the night.

Before Halloween

  1. Create a Puppy Safe Zone - Set up a puppy safe zone away from your front door. This might be a puppy exercise pen, crate, or a baby gated-off room. Begin getting your puppy comfortable by playing training games and giving her relaxing chew toys inside the safe zone.

  2. Time to Socialize - With so many new and spooky decorations around the neighborhood, take a walk without your puppy to give yourself a rundown of what he might be unsure of. Make a note of decorations that move or make sounds as these might be where he will need help to create positive associates. Bring treats and toys and don’t forget to take your time and let him explore at his own pace.

During Halloween

  1. Expend Extra Energy - During the day and before Trick-or-Treaters start to make their rounds engage in play, training, and sniffing games with your puppy. You might even go for a long walk with her. This way she will have be more likely to relax during the event.

  2. Use your Puppy Safe Zone - When Halloween night arrives set your puppy up to relax in their safe zone by giving him something to do. A puzzle toy he has done before, long lasting chew, or frozen kong will keep him busy while you give out candy to your spooky guests.

  3. Put Away Candy - Certain foods we like to eat on Halloween can be toxic to our puppies. It is important to make sure that these foods are kept out of her reach at all times. Make sure to put them away in high and closed cupboards or drawers.
