4th Of July Tips

The 4th of July is just one week away! While most of our family and friends are preparing for their BBQs, here at Little Paws Academy we are currently reminding clients to prepare their pups for one of the loudest nights of the year. If you don’t have a session scheduled with us this week, here’s what you can do to help your pup before the big night arrives.

  1. Prepare - Make arrangements for your 4th of July evening ahead of time. When you can, stay home with your pup. If you can’t, find someone your dog knows and trusts to stay with him. Set up a white noise machine or play music or the tv during the booming fireworks to drown out the sound. You might even purchase a ThunderShirt ahead of time for your pup to wear to help reduce anxiety.

  2. Safe Space - Create a safe space, such as a crate, small dark room, or other space in the center of your home away from windows and glass doors. Provide comfortable bedding, favorite toys, and most cherished chew toys for your dog’s entertainment. Practice using this space ahead of time to allow your pup time to get used to it before the big night.

  3. Training - Help your pup become comfortable with the sound of fireworks by playing recordings during the day while playing training exercises or playing with a toy. Start by playing the sounds softly and gradually increase the volume throughout the activity, making sure your pup is not showing signs of fear at any point, until they reach full volume.

  4. Medications - If your pup has a history of severe anxiety around thunder and fireworks, I recommend you talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible. While some veterinarians might prescribe medication over the phone, most require a visit. So schedule your appointment today.

With a little preparation you can help to make this year your pup’s best 4th of July yet. If you’re still not exactly sure what to do, contact us at Little Paws Academy to learn more about our training programs and other ways we can help you set your pup up for success!
